Why?

At least for F1 the cost of entry is absurd. And they participate in other racing series that get them what they need.

They don’t need to when their halo sports car kicks ass in GT class.

Well, I’ve been saying since before the bailout that GM ought to be broken up, but if we’re using logic then the fact that the second biggest carmaker doesn’t use F1 as a form of promotion might indicate that it’s a bit of a waste of money to do so.

They have won at the GT class at LeMans many times since 2000. That is a pretty big deal I think.

I don’t think we’ll see a American manufacturer in F1 unless it gains a LOT more traction over here.

They already play in:
NASCAR (and many smaller series)
Indy
NHRA
GT racing - Vettes and Dayton Prototypes

They’re just 8yrs out of restructuring and still being called Government Motors by some. What they do play in they probably make money on, or don’t lose a whole bunch (Vette GT cars are losers I imagine, but cheap, relatively). DP and Vettes are low entry sportscar racing.

P1 and F1 take many hundreds of millions (more like a billion) to start up. Yearly running costs are in the hundreds of millions alone. Monstrous CapEx and OpEx costs. There is no bang for the buck here. And it will take years to get a program running, let alone have any successful. I’d laugh you out of the boardroom if you were GM CEO if suggested this (no offense). It would be nice, but no - profits, earnings/share, growth. Those are the only things that matter.

Seriously. Not sure what the point of them going p1 or f1 would be. They chased every one else out of GT1 and then had to follow them to gt2 because they ran out of competition GT1 when every one else left. hahaha

They tried that once. For two years they attempted to run a Cadillac badged LMP car to promote the Northstar engine. It wasn’t particularly successful.

It would be nice if they had a program at the top-tier of sportscar or open wheel. I think a P1 program would make more sense for GM than F1, but I think the top P1 teams are spending as much as they would have in F1 anyway.

In any case, whether they win or not, I think they’re the kings of GT. Daytona 24 made a good case for them, but I still remember a sportscar race from Laguna Seca a few years back (must’ve been 4-5 years ago at this point) where they were racing against a Flying Lizard Porsche 911 and it was another down-to-the-wire finish, which I think ended up with the Corvette hitting the wall on the final lap.

GM makes GT racing incredibly fun, and that's fine with me - I'd hate for other priorities to conflict with what has been a very successful racing program.

Because Toyota dominates at F1. And where’s that VW F1 car?

Toyota was in F1 and now is in P1. And VW dominates P1 for more than a decade.

Both series would be good for GM, specifically for Cadillac.

Why? Because Formula 1 will always generate interest, no matter the rules, engines, manufacturers or Bernie’s presence or absence.

On the other hand, P1 has probably the most advanced cars in the world and requires extremely professional staff to run a team. Building a competitive LMP1 car, will massively improve the technology, mindset and image of any manufacturer.

They could axe the DP car. And the dragster thingy since that isn’t really a source of progress.

Racing in the top class at Le Mans or in F1, is an amazing achievement in itself, being competitive too, that takes you to a whole new level. Why? Because time and time again was proven, that if you don’t take those series seriously, they will kick your ass, and send you back home, defeated and humiliated.

Or it means that it was overfocused on the American market. It paid for that by going bankrupt.

Yes, but what was the root cause of that? Hmmn, we’re confusing two different arguments: whether F1 is a good brand investment, and whether GM is correctly organised.
